Regional Medical Director, Central & West Regions
Shape the Future of Health Care in Ontario
Ontario Health is building a more connected, equitable, and patient-centred health system. Achieving this vision requires exceptional clinical leaders who can bridge strategy and frontline care, inspire collaboration, and drive meaningful improvements for patients, providers, and communities.
As the Regional Medical Director, you’ll play an important role connecting health care networks to deliver quality care across a large geographic area. Ontario Health Central and West are two of Ontario Health’s six geographic regions, collectively serving approximately 4.4 million people across diverse and growing urban and rural communities. Together, these regions span a vast geographic area, from Mississauga to Huntsville and Orangeville to Markham in Central, and from Waterloo to Windsor and Tobermory to Niagara Falls in West.
The Opportunity
As Regional Medical Director, you will provide clinical leadership across the Central & West Regions, ensuring clinical perspectives are embedded in decision-making, health system planning, and transformation initiatives. The Regional Medical Director is intended as a practicing physician who will work a minimum of 0.6FTE- 0.8FTE per week. This leader provides oversight of all Regional Clinical Leads (physicians) (~30+ physician leaders working 0.2FTE across 2 regions).
You will influence regional and provincial priorities, lead complex cross-sector initiatives, strengthen relationships across the health system, and champion innovative approaches that improve outcomes for patients and communities.
Success in this role will be defined by your ability to connect strategy with clinical practice, build alignment across diverse stakeholders, and deliver meaningful system-level improvements.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Clinical Leadership
- Provide clinical leadership aligned with Ontario Health's strategic goals and regional priorities.
- Embed clinical expertise into health system planning, service design, resource optimization, and policy implementation.
- Establish regional clinical priorities and measurable outcomes that support integrated care delivery.
- Champion equitable, accessible, and culturally safe models of care that address the diverse needs of communities across the region.
- Lead and mentor Regional Clinical Leads while fostering collaboration, accountability, and clinical excellence.
Health System Transformation
- Partner with executive leaders to advance integrated clinical, operational, and strategic initiatives.
- Provide expert clinical advice on emerging health system challenges, service pressures, workforce issues, and opportunities for innovation.
- Lead complex cross-sector initiatives that improve access, quality, care coordination, and health system performance.
- Collaborate with Ontario Health Teams, Health Service Providers, and provincial partners to advance sustainable models of integrated care.
- Translate strategic priorities into actionable initiatives that deliver measurable system-wide impact.
Quality, Performance & Clinical Excellence
- Advance evidence-informed practices, clinical standards, and quality improvement initiatives across the continuum of care.
- Utilize clinical, operational, and performance data to identify opportunities, mitigate risks, and drive continuous improvement.
- Promote shared accountability for patient outcomes, equitable access, and responsible stewardship of health system resources.
Partnership & Stakeholder Leadership
- Build trusted relationships with physicians and physician leaders, Chiefs of Staff, health system leaders, Ontario Health Teams, and Health Service Providers.
- Chair and lead regional clinical forums to strengthen alignment, collaboration, and accountability.
- Represent regional clinical perspectives within provincial leadership discussions and advisory committees.
- Foster meaningful engagement with clinicians, patients, families, Indigenous partners, and communities to ensure diverse perspectives inform health system priorities.
- Advance a unified One Ontario Health approach through collaboration with provincial clinical and operational leaders.
The Leader We Are Seeking
You are a highly respected physician executive who combines clinical credibility with strategic vision, political acuity, and a demonstrated ability to influence across complex health systems.
You understand that meaningful transformation requires more than strategy. It requires trusted relationships, effective collaboration, disciplined execution, and the ability to bring diverse stakeholders together around common goals.
You are equally comfortable advising executives, engaging physicians and frontline clinicians, navigating complex system challenges, and translating ambitious priorities into practical action.
Most importantly, you are a collaborative leader who recognizes that lasting change is achieved through partnership, influence, and shared accountability.
Qualifications and Experience
- Physician with a minimum of 10 years of clinical practice experience, in good standing and eligible to practise medicine without restriction in Ontario, with the intention of maintaining clinical practice while serving in this role.
- Significant senior executive and/or clinical leadership experience within regional, provincial, or broader health system environments.
- Demonstrated success leading large-scale transformation, clinical integration, and organizational change initiatives.
- Proven ability to lead complex cross-sector partnerships that improve access, quality, care coordination, and health system performance.
